How do you work this thing?

Hipster-Nerd, settle down right now!
I was worried about this. Sounds like the Wii is coming back down to reality as people start actually playing it. One thing I was wondering about is the Wii-mote and actions like swinging a sword. If you read that link, the homophobic frat-boy roommate did exactly what I thought people would do: use the Wii-mote in a practical manner and not the way it was imagined.
When the NES came out with that floor mat to accompany Track and Field (or something) I thought “Cool! Virtual running to make you character run!” But then I went to my friend’s house and saw how he and his brother figured out how to run really fast – they sorta stood in front of the pad with just their heels hitting the sensor, then they’d just sorta bend at the toes to lift and drop their heels, thus hitting the pad much faster than if you picked up your feet and ran in place. So if you didn’t want to lose the race by a mile, you had to conform to the goofy ‘heel-running’ to play the game. I dunno, for some reason I was suddenly disillusioned by the floor mat.
So I imagine with Zelda, fat dudes sitting on the couch, resting their head in their hand on their knee, with the Wii-mote in the other hand (resting on the other knee) and just lazily flicking his wrist back and forth to do the mighty sword swings of the heroic Link.
Hopefully the bow and arrow action will be cool (and non-corruptible), or more innovative games will come out. But I dunno. I’m Wii-orried. Nintendo has pinned all their hopes on this way of gaming, and if that doesn’t work out for them, they don’t have much to fall back on – the Wii is essentially a slightly better Gamecube in a slimmer case, power-wise. No high resolution support, no eye-candy to compete with the PS3 or XBox 360. Godspeed, wee little Wii.
And another instance: Guitar Hero. I’ve seen some videos on YouTube and noticed nobody is “lame” enough to actually strum the guitar, they just push down on the “strum-bar” with their thumb. Another simulated action foiled again by practicality.
Also it sounds like the sensor bar is picky and you have to aim towards it, rather than, you know, the stuff on the tv screen.
Update Nov. 13: It appears the Penny Arcade guys have the same concern about Wii-intensity
technorati, what the heck? INdex this shizzz!

Sun setting, leaves turning
According to one source, today’s sunset was at 7:28 PM. That might not sound too bad to you, especially when you think about how early sunset is in the winter, but daylight is “ghost riding the whip” the hell outta here fast... which is sorta a no-no when ghost ridin’.
But I’ve been monitoring your progress, daylight, and you’ve been shaving one minute, sometimes two, off of each day lately. Now, throw in the impending Daylight Savings Revert to Standard Time Nose-Grab, and we’ve got ourselves a goddamn catastrophe.
Before we know it, the temperature will drop, the trees will turn color, and Michael Myers will be behind that shrub watching you walk home from school.

Ah yes, an animation. Sadly, I don’t seem to have the gumption these days to even do a beginning of a cartoon.
Oh well, Rheinstein wasn’t my intellectual property anyway.

Temporary park made by Rebar
For some reason, I thought this had been done before, but nevertheless, it’s refreshing to see this statement and act of generosity by the fine folks at Rebar. I wonder how soon before a Starbucks opens in the next stall? btw, are Starbucks jokes reeeally old now?
I wish they’d stick a park in the empty lot of the Park East development – it’s just sitting there, empty for a couple of years now. I suppose there’s some sort of stalemate going on between the city and developers, but I think a nice park circled by trees and a big fountain in the center, would be dope. Although it’s not the most accessible area in the world, and there’s kind of a busy street there, too… yet, children DO love wearing casts…
